    Description

USS HONOLULU CL-48 Offered is a United States Navy cover postmarked
from Dayton, Ohio on Dec 28, 1995. Blue photo of actual ship in Honolulu
Harbor (1939) printed on cachet #1492 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. This 608 foot,
Brooklyn Class cruiser, was commissioned in 1938, and had prewar service on the West
Coast. She joined the Pacific Fleet in Hawaii in 1939 and was moored in the Pearl
Harbor Naval Station when the fleet was attacked 7 December 1941. The ship only had
minor damaged from a near miss. After repairs, the vessel escorted a convoy to San
    Francisco in 1942.
Later, this fine cruiser fought in eight major battle stars in the Pacific theater during WW II
and lost her bow to an enemy torpedo in 1943. USS Honolulu was repaired and was still
serving when decommissioned in 1947. See her web pages for details of her design, construction,
    battles and service history.
The cover was franked with a 32 cent 50th Anniversary of WW II stamp # 2681i on a gummed envelope.
Seller has over 90 different covers for ships attacked at Pearl Harbor in 1941.
